Sister M. Theresa Joyce, IHM

July 17, 1855 – February 21, 1925

Sister M. Theresa Joyce, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, February 21, 1925, at St. Rose Convent in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on July 17, 1855 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Bridget. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Catharine Joyce. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1872, received the religious habit on August 15, 1872, and made profession of her vows on February 9, 1875.

Sister Theresa served as a teacher at the following schools: Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Scranton, PA; St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA; St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA; Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA; and St. Rose School in Carbondale, PA.

She is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth McNulty and Catherine Joyce, both of Carbondale, PA.

The funeral will be Tuesday, February 24 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Rose Church in Carbondale, with interment to follow at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Carbondale.

The Right Reverend Bishop presided at the ceremonies, giving the white veil to the following: Miss Bridget Joyce of Pittston, who received the name in religion of Sister M. Theresa; Miss Frances Rose Hogan of Susquehanna, Sister M. Bernardine; Miss Margaret Flack of Philadelphia, Sister M. Seraphine; Miss Margaret Leonard, of Ireland, Sister M. Ludwina; Miss Mary Donnelly of Susquehanna, Sister Mary Conception; and Miss Bridget Maria Kelly of New York, Sister M. Rosalia.”
