Sister M. Sergius O’Donnell, IHM

Sister M. Sergius O’Donnell, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Monday, May 21, 1979 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an extended illness.
She was born on January 5, 1892 in Lansford, Pennsylvania, and given the name Margaret. She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Rose Malloy O’Donnell. She entered the Congregation on March 24, 1919, received the religious habit on August 2 1919, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1921.
Sister Sergius served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Michael’s School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA; St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA; St. Mary, Help of Christians Elementary School in Pittston, PA; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA; as well as at schools located in New York and North Carolina.
From 1964 until the time of her death, Sister Sergius served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph, Daniel, Reynolds Joseph and Edward Matthew, and four sisters, Ella, Eleanor, Mary Loretta Stevens and Anna Puderbaugh.
She is survived by a sister, Rose Mary Carstensen of Johnstown, PA, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday, May 23 with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will followat St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call Tuesday afternoon after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
