Sister M. Rose Angela Ruddy, IHM

Sister M. Rose Angela Ruddy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Saturday, October 1, 1983, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on April 27, 1911 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Dennis J. and Anna V. Roche Ruddy. She entered the IHM Congregation on January 6, 1926, received the religious habit on August 15, 1926, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1928.

Sister Rose Angela served as teacher at the following schools: Chapel School in Scranton, PA; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA; St. Thomas Elementary School in Providence, RI; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY; Archbishop Neale Elementary School in LaPlata, MD; and St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA. She also taught at elementary schools located in Manhasset, NY.

Sister served as principal at the following schools: Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Ann Elementary School in Devon, CT; and St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NY.

From 1983 until the time of her death, Sister Rose Angela was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by sister, Kathleen (infant), and three brothers, Thomas E., Gerard A. and Dennis J.

She is survived by her sister, Sister Maria Rita Ruddy, IHM of Scranton, PA; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday, October 4, at 10:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at St. Paul’s Church, Scranton, with interment to follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday afternoon or evening.

Loving sister to Sister Maria Rita, and faithful friend! Sister Rose Angela was a quiet, frail-looking teacher who worked miracles especially with the small children at Chapel School. Her determination and strength came from a prayerfulness centered in listening to God’s word in scripture and her deep love of God and her community.
