Sister M. Rosario Gibbons, IHM

July 23, 1899 – February 13, 1997

Sister M. Rosario Gibbons, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, February 13, 1997 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on July 23, 1899 in Port Ewen, NY, and was given the name Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late John and Mary Donnelly Gibbons. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 2, 1917, made temporary profession of her vows on December 27, 1919, and final profession of her vows on December 8, 1930.

Sister Rosario served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Leo High School in Ashley, PA, from 1929 to 1932; St. Rose High School in Carbondale, PA, from 1937 to 1942; St. Paul High School in Scranton, PA, from 1942 to 1944; St. John High School in Scranton, PA, from 1944 to 1946; St. Cecilia High School in Wyoming, PA, from 1946 to 1947; St. Patrick High School in Scranton, PA, from 1947 to 1957; Holy Rosary High School in Scranton, PA, from 1957 to 1972; St. Joseph High School in Renovo, PA; and St. Thomas Regional School in Providence, RI; as well as at high schools located in Altoona and Pittsburgh, PA.

Sister also served as the sacristan at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1972 to 1984.

From 1984 to the time of her death, Sister Rosario served in prayer ministry at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin and Social Studies from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Lawrence, and two sisters, Ann Patricia Byrne and Mary Dempsey.

She is survived three nephews, Bernard Byrne of Virginia, Lawrence Byrne of Texas, Richard Gibbons of New York, nine nieces, Elizabeth Rafferty, Elizabeth Fabysack, Marie Smith, Gertrude Gibbons, Bernice Thompson, Kathryn Bowser, all of New York, Mary Brewer of Colorado, Eleanor Columbo of Connecticut, Marie Malloy of Pennsylvania, and many grandnieces and grandnephews, including Francine Boehrer of West Hempstead, NY.

The funeral will be Tuesday, February 17 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday after 2:00 p.m.
