Sister M. Rosamund Wyvill, IHM

Sister M. Rosamund Wyvill, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, August 7, 1959, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on November 25, 1893, in Upper Marlboro, MD, and given the name Ruth. She was the daughter of the late Joseph V. and Sarah Purdy Wyvill. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 1, 1932, received the religious habit on April 24, 1933, and made profession of her vows on April 30, 1935.

Sister Rosamund served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA, from 1935 to 1939; St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, PA, from 1939 to 1945; and St. Mary Elementary School in Goldsboro, NC, from 1951 to 1957.

Sister also served as principal and teacher at St. Edward Elementary School in Twin Falls, ID, from 1945 to 1951.

From 1957 until the time of her death, Sister Rosamund was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Christopher and George Augustus, and a sister, Mary Genevieve Wyvill.

She is survived by three sisters, Edith Jenkins of Mechanicsville, MD, Sister M. Honorat Wyvill, CBS, of the Sisters of Bon Secours, stationed at Grosse Point, MI, and Ida Elizabeth Wyvill of Maryland; four brothers, Samuel, Joseph, Bernard and Earl Wyvill, all of Upper Marlboro, MD; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her step-mother, Eva “Alberta” Wyvill of Upper Marlboro, MD.

The funeral will be Monday, August 10, at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Sunday at the Marian Convent.

Archival Remembrance:

To know Sister Rosamund was to love her. Her gentle spirit will linger in the convents and schools where she lived and taught. In God’s dispensation, she was called to suffer much, both spiritually and physically; but always she exemplified a spirit of self-abnegation, and a deep appreciation of the care the Congregation gave her. All close to her felt that she was a very chosen soul, dear to God and beloved by all. She was a cultured, gentle religious who will be long and prayerfully remembered. May God grant eternal rest to her who served Him so faithfully and so well.
