Sister M. Redempta Doudican, IHM

June 16, 1889 – December 15, 1955

Sister M. Redempta Doudican, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, December 15, 1955, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on June 16, 1889 in Dunmore, PA, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Thomas J. (T.J.) and Catherine McDonald Doudican. She entered the IHM Congregation on December 8, 1911, received the religious habit on August 2, 1912, and made profession of her vows on August 3, 1914. As a novice, she was known as Sister Mary of the Angels, but received a name change at profession to Sister M. Redempta.

Sister Redempta served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1921 to 1922; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY, From 1924 to 1925 and 1932 to 1934; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, in 1926 and 1952; St. Peter of Alcantara School in Port Washington, NY, in 1927; St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo, PA, in 1927; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1927 to 1928; Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA, from 1928 to 1931 and in 1954; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1934 to 1935; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1935 to 1936; St. John High School in Pittston, PA, from 1936 to 1937; St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY, in 1937; St. Mary Elementary School in Goldsboro, NC, from 1943 to 1944; Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School in Forty Fort, PA, from 1953 to 1954; and St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT, from 1954 to 1955. She also served as a teacher at Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA, and Sacred Heart School in LaPlata, MD.

Sister Redempta served on the faculty at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1945 to 1952.

The funeral will be Saturday, December 17 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, PA. Interment will follow in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call on Friday at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA.


Archival Remembrance:

Sister M. Redempta Doudican served the Community in quiet dignity. The gracious manner which characterized her long and fruitful life, was evident shortly before she breathed her last breath, as she gently asked the attendant Sisters to go to rest.
