Sister M. Ramona Scanlon, IHM

Sister M. Ramona Scanlon, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, January 2, 1973, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on September 16, 1907, in New York, NY, and given the name Anna Marie. She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Catherine Moy Scanlon. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 18, 1928, received the religious habit on August 15, 1928, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1930.

Sister Ramona served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Leo School in Ashley, PA, in 1931; St. Patrick School in Oneida, NY, from 1931 to 1933; St. Dominic School in Oyster Bay, NY, from 1933 to 1936; St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA, from 1936 to 1940; St. Cecilia School in Exeter, PA, from 1940 to 1943; and Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA, from 1943 to 1965. She also served as assistant principal at Marywood Seminary from 1943 to 1954.

Sister served as the first principal and superior of a new mission in Lima, Peru, called the Colegio Parroquial Santisimo Nombre de Jesus School, from 1965 to 1967.

At Marywood College in Scranton, PA, Sister Ramona served as assistant Spanish language professor from 1930 to 1931, and 1967 to 1972, and the Assistant Chairman of the Modern Language Department.

From 1972 until the time of her death, Sister Ramona was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree from Catholic University of America.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Daniel, John, and Bernard, and four sisters, Mary and Anna Scanlon, Catherine Irwin, and Mary T. Rossler.

She is survived by a sister, Rose Scanlon of Woodside, NY; two brothers, Charles of Woodside, NY, and Patrick of New York City, NY; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday, January 4, at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday night and Wednesday at the Marian Convent.

Sister Ramona Scnalon, I.H.M., Assistant Professor of Spanish at Marywood College since 1967, died on January 2, 1973, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Carbondale, Pennsylvania. Until the time of her illness, Sister served as Assistant Chairman of the Modern Language Department at Marywood College.

Before becoming a full-time member of the College faculty, Sister was Principal at Colegio Parroquial Santisimo Nombre de Jesus in Lima, Peru. Prior to that assignment she had been Assistant Principal and Instructor in French, Spanish and Latin at Marywood Seminary 1943-1965; and had taught in several schools in New York and Pennsylvania.

Sister received her AB degree from Marywood in 1929 and was a frequent member of the Summer Session faculty since that time. She took her MA from Catholic University of American in 1950 and did further graduate work at Laval University, Quebec, Canada.

Sister was a past Vice-President of the Middle States’ Association of Modern Language Teachers. She also held membership in AATSP, the AATF, and the Pennsylvania Modern Language Association. She served on Evaluation Committees for Wyoming Seminary, Kingston, Pennsylvania; Saint Mary High School, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; and Williamsport High School, Williamsport, Pennsylvania.”
