Sister M. Philomena Snow, IHM

November 9, 1857 – September 17, 1919

Sister M. Philomena Snow, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, September 17, 1919, at Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA.

She was born on November 9, 1857 in Johnstown, PA, and given the name Alice. She was the daughter of the late Matthew and Mary (Maria) Maxwell Snow. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 16, 1886, received the religious habit on March 1, 1887, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1889.

Sister Philomena served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA; Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA; St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA; and Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA. She also served for five years in our western missions.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ellen “Ella” Snow.

She is survived by two brothers, Henry Francis and Matthew, Jr.; four sisters, Catherine, Mary Ann Lavin, Margaret “Maggie” Reap and Elizabeth Nolan; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, September 19 with a high mass of requiem in the chapel at Marywood College in Scranton, PA. Interment to follow at the Marywood College Cemetery, on the grounds of Marywood College in Scranton.
