Sister M. Muriel Whalen, IHM

Sister M. Muriel Whalen, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, February 8, 1996, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on September 17, 1899, in Pittston, PA, and given the name Kathleen. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Walsh Whalen. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1919, and made temporary profession of her vows on August 15, 1922.

Sister Muriel served as a teacher of religion, English and mathematics, at the following schools: St. Ann High School in Scranton, PA, from 1925 to 1930; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1948 to 1949; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1955 to 1956; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, from 1956 to 1959; Christ the King Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, from 1959 to 1970; and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ. She also taught at schools located in Williamsport, PA, Brooklyn, Forest Hills, Manhasset and New York City, NY, and Baltimore, MD.

Sister also served as a catechetical instructor at St. Ignatius Parish Catechetical Program in Kingston, PA, from 1970 to 1972. She was a secretary in the school office at St. Mary’s Elementary School in Manhasset, NY, from 1972 to 1982.

From 1982 until the time of her death, Sister Muriel was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in English from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Elizabeth (Bessie) Whalen, Margaret Whalen, Angela Mack and Mary T. Noone, and six brothers, Thomas, John, Joseph, James, William, and Samuel.

She is survived by four nephews, Thomas Whalen, Joseph Whalen, Thomas Mack and William Mack; and a niece, Mary Angela Mack.

The funeral will be Wednesday, February 14, at 10:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call Tuesday after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.

Her death on February 8 was the end of a life that always saw the bright side of situations and thus endeared her to the many people who knew her.
