Sister M. Muriel Whalen, IHM

September 17, 1899 – February 8, 1996

Sister M. Muriel Whalen, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, February 8, 1996 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Born September 17, 1899 in Pittston, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Walsh Whalen. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1919, and made her temporary profession of vows on August 15, 1922.

Sister Muriel served as a teacher of religion, English and mathematics, at the following schools: St. Ann High School in Scranton, PA, from 1925 to 1930; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1948 to 1949; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1955 to 1956; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, from 1956 to 1959; Christ the King Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, from 1959 to 1970; and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ; as well as at schools located in Williamsport, PA; Brooklyn, Forest Hills, Manhasset and New York City, NY; and Baltimore, MD.

Sister also served as a catechetical instructor at St Ignatius Parish Catechetical Program in Kingston, PA, from 1970 to 1972; and secretary in the school office at St. Mary Elementary School in Manhasset, NY, from 1972 to 1982.

From 1982 until the time of her death, she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in English from Marywood College.

She is preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Whalen and Mary Noone; and three brothers, James, William and Joseph.

She is survived by four nephews, Thomas Whalen, Joseph Whalen, Thomas Mack and William Mack; and a niece, Mary Angela Mack.

Interment will follow the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.

Archival Remembrance:

Embodying the IHM Charism of joyful, loving service, Sr. Muriel lived nearly 75 years of religious life, touching the lives of thousands with her happy heart and positive spirit. Her death on February 8 was the end of a life that always saw the bright side of situations and thus endeared her to the many people who knew her.
