Sister M. Monita Casey, IHM

November 11, 1897 – October 8, 1968

Sister M. Monita Casey, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, October 8, 1968 at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, PA.

She was born on November 11, 1897 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Mary Loretta. She was the daughter of the late William F. and Mary Theresa Maloney Casey. She entered the IHM Congregation on January 10, 1928, received the religious habit on August 15, 1928, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1930.

Sister Monita served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Raymond Elementary School in Lynbrook, NY; St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA; St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD; St. Paul Elementary School in Edgewood, RI; St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Agnes Elementary School in Baltimore, MD; Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Elementary School in New York, NY; and St. Cecilia Elementary School in Exter, PA.

Sister also served as a social worker at St. Joseph’s Shelter in Scranton, PA, from 1950 to 1952.

From 1952 until the time of her death, Sister Monita served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was preceded in death by a brother, James Joseph, and a sister, Agnes.

She is survived by a sister, Catherine Elizabeth Higgins of Newark, NJ; two brothers, Edmund John of Dunmore, PA, and William Paul of Scranton, PA; and cousins, including Monsignor Robert A. McNulty of Scranton, PA.

The funeral will be Thursday, October 10 at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel, with celebrant Monsignor Robert McNulty. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Wednesday afternoon.
