Sister M. Matthias Walsh, IHM

Sister M. Matthias Walsh, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, June 19, 1956, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on August 26, 1888 in Carbondale, PA, and given the name Margaret Hildegarde. She was the daughter of the late Patrick H. and Margaret Forkin Walsh. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 2, 1905, received the religious habit on July 16, 1907, and made profession of her vows on April 13, 1909.

Sister Matthias served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Rosalia High School in Pittsburgh, PA; Holy Rosary High School in Scranton, PA; and St. Joseph High School in Renovo, PA.

Sister served as superior and principal at the following schools: St. Rosalia High School in Pittsburgh, PA; All Saints High School in Masontown, PA; and St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sister M. Eulalia Walsh, IHM, and Catherine Roberts.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Sister Theophante Walsh, IHM and Sister M. Chrysostom Roberts, IHM, both of Scanton, PA.

The funeral will be on Thursday, June 21, at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent, interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Wednesday at the Marian Convent.

Sister Matthias, though suffering serious heart trouble, labored almost to the end, insisting that she was able to continue her apostolate of teaching, which she so thoroughly enjoyed.
