Sister M. Mariel Dougher, IHM

December 3, 1917 – May 13, 1982

Sister M. Mariel Dougher, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Thursday, May 13, 1982 at Scranton State Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on December 3, 1917 in Pittston, Pennsylvania, and given the name Alice. She was the daughter of the late Michael William and Anna Connors Dougher. She entered the Congregation on September 8, 1935, received the religious habit on April 30, 1936, and made profession of her vows on May 3, 1938.

Sister Mariel served on the faculty at the following schools: St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA; St. Leo in Ashely; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, where she also served as local superior; St. Edward Elementary School in Twin Falls, ID; IHM Academy in Coeur d’Alene, ID; St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD; and St. Mary Elementary School in Goldsboro, NC.

In 1978 Sister Mariel joined the support staff of St. Joseph’s Center in Scranton, PA, where she served in the development and business offices. She also served as a volunteer at St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen in Scranton, PA.

She is preceded in death by a four sisters, Helen, Anna, Rita, and Grace Mooney.

She is surivived by two sisters, Margaret Mary Lyons of Chula Vista, CA, and Catherine Cox of San Bernardino, CA, a brother, John of Chula Vista CA, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday; with Mass of Christian Burial at the IHM Generalate Chapel on the grounds of Marywood College in Scranton, PA, at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call at St. Joseph’s Center Convent in Scranton, PA, on Sunday afternoon or evening.
