Sister M. Margrete Kelley, IHM

April 2, 1911 – October 28, 1984

Sister M. Margrete Kelley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Sunday, October 28, 1984, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on April 2, 1911 in Exeter, PA, and given the name Agnes. She was the daughter of the late Patrick J. and Anna L. O’Brien Kelley. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1935, religious habit on April 30, 1936, and made profession of her vows on May 2, 1938.

Sister Margrete served as a teacher of junior high school students at St. Ephrem School in Brooklyn, NY; and St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA.

In 1943, Sister Margrete became registrar at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, and served in that post until 1973, when she became a guidance counselor at the college.

From 1977 until the time of her death, Sister Margrete served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Marywood College, and a Master of Science degree in guidance from the University of Pennsylvania.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Reverend Thomas F., Reverend John P., Eugene Michael, and Bernard J., and four sisters, Marguerite Connor, Mary Clare Hastings, Grace (infant), and Regina Boyle.

She is survived by a sister, Anna Grace Kirby of Swoyersville, PA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, October 31 at 10:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday afternoon or evening at the Marian Convent.
