Sister M. Malachi McKernan, IHM

Sister M. Malachi McKernan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, November 26, 1950, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.
She was born on July 19, 1877 in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and given the name Mary Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late Francis and Johanna (Joann) Sullivan McKernan. She entered the IHM Congregation on December 8, 1905, received the religious habit on July 26, 1906, and made profession of vows on July 16, 1908.
Sister Malachi served as a domestic at the following: St. Mary of the Mount Convent in Pittsburgh, PA; St. Alphonsus Convent in New York City, NY; St. John’s Convent in Binghamton, NY; St. Joseph’s Shelter in Scranton, PA; and Holy Name of Mary Convent in Montrose, PA.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Francis Jr., and a sister, Katie McKernan.
She is survived by five sisters, Margaret (Maggie) Quinn, Lucy Agnes Reid, Loretta Garvey, and Gertrude Speece, all of Wilkes-Barre, PA, and Regina (Jean) Gaynor of Detroit, MI; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday, November 29, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, PA, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call on Tuesday at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA.
