Sister M. Madalena Gilroy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, April 25, 1971, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on July 18, 1878 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late John and Margaret Ann Gilroy. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 2, 1903, received the religious habit on December 31, 1903, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1905.

Sister Madalena served as a teacher at the following schools: Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA; St. Rosalia Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA; All Saints Elementary School in Masontown, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY; St. Rita Elementary School in Dundalk, MD; St. Alphonsus Elementary School in New York City; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA; Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA; and St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA.

Sister served as principal at St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY, from 1930 to 1933, and St. Rita Elementary School in Dundalk, MD, from 1933 to 1934.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Sister M. Ethelbert, IHM, Margaret Gill, Alice Cosgrove and Elizabeth Gilroy, and two brothers, Martin and Reverend Leo.

She is survived by two brothers, William of Pittston, PA, and Raymond of Washington, DC, nieces and nephews, including our Sister M. Marita Gill, IHM.

The funeral will be Wednesday, April 28 at 9:30 am at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
