Sister M. Louis Mills, IHM

February 4, 1894 – August 1, 1986

Sister M. Louis Mills, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Friday, October 1, 1986 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on February 4, 1894 in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, and was thedaughter of the late James and Bridget Kenehan Mills. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 2, 1915, received the religious habit on December 28, 1915, and made profession of her vows on January 3, 1918.

Sister Louis served as a teacher at the following schools: Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA; St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA; St. Basil High School in Dushore, PA; St. Joseph High School in Williamsport, PA; Bishop Guilfoyle HIgh School in Altoona, PA; and All Saints High School in Masontown, PA; as well as high schools located in Coeur d’Alene, ID, and New York City, NY.

From 1971 until the time of her death, Sister Louis served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Sister M. Angelus, IHM.

She is survived by several cousins.

The funeral will be Monday, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Sunday afternoon or evening.

Archival Remembrance:

In her long career in education Sister Louis served as a teacher of high school math, science, languages and history at Laurel Hill Academy, St. John’s, St. Basil’s, and St. Joseph’s. She was also assigned to IHM schools in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, New York City, Altoona and Masontown, Pennsylvania. In 1971, poor health forced her to retire to the Marian Convent.
