Sister M. Lothaire Saunders, IHM

Sister M. Lothaire Saunders, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, December 11, 1964, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on December 15, 1920, in Brooklyn, NY, and given the name Ruth Jane. She was the daughter of late Joseph Edward and Jane “Jennie” Margaret Farrell Saunders. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1946, received the religious habit on May 8, 1947, and made profession of her vows on May 9, 1949.

Sister Lothaire served as a teacher at the following schools: Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1949 to 1952; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1952 to 1953; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY, from 1953 to 1954; St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA, from 1954 to 1956; St. Paul School in Cranston, RI, from 1955 to 1956; St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA, from 1956 to 1958; and South Catholic High School in Scranton, PA, from 1958 to 1960.

From 1960 until the time of her death, Sister Lothaire was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

In addition to her parents, she is also survived by a brother, Joseph V., all of Brooklyn, NY; a niece and a nephew.

The funeral will be Monday, December 14, at 9:30 a.m. with mass at the Marian Convent. Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Sunday at the Marian Convent.

Archival Remembrance:

Sister M. Lothaire’s religious life was shadowed by suffering. She was an excellent teacher, devoted to her student and their needs. The Sisters who taught with her are mindful of her kindness, generosity, and charity in the many problems which teaching presents. Illness, often prevented her from exercising the charity which her generous spirit prompted; but she was always willing to offer herself. Years of physical suffering had made her familiar with pain; but the last stages of her fatal disease drew from her the last full measure of suffering. She recognized God’s summons to eternal life, and she humbly and generously resigned herself to all that God asked of her. May she rest in peace.
