Sister M. Lawrence Tierney, IHM

October 4, 1895 – September 12, 1970

Sister M. Lawrence Tierney, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, September 12, 1970, at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA.

She was born on October 26, 1897 in Susquehanna, PA, and given the name Anna Mary. She was the daughter of the late Edward J. and Hannah Doyle Tierney. She entered the IHM Congregation on October 1, 1914, received the religious habit on July 6, 1915, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1917.

Sister Lawrence served as a teacher in the following IHM schools: Holy Rosary School in Scranton, PA, from 1917 to 1918; St. John School in Pittston, PA, from 1918 to 1919; St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA, from 1919 to 1921; St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA, from 1921 to 1923; St. Leo School in Ashley, PA, from 1923 to 1928; Sacred Heart of Mary School in Jermyn, PA, from 1928 to 1929; St. Charles Borromeo Elemantary School in Sugar Notch, PA, from 1929 to 1934; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1936 to 1938; St. Thomas Aquinas School in Archbald, PA, from 1938 to 1939; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, from 1939 to 1944; Mother of Mercy School in Washington, NC, from 1944 to 1949; Holy Rosary School in Scranton, PA, from 1949 to 1952; St. Peter of Alcantara School in Port Washington, NY, from 1952 to 1955; and Epiphany School in Sayre, PA, from 1955 to 1970.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo and Edmund Joseph.

She is survived by a sister, Cecelia O’Brien of Baltimore, MD; nieces and nephews.

There will be a con-celebrated high Mass of the recitation of the Rosary at Church of the Epiphany at 11:00 am on Monday, September 14. Following the Mass, the casket will be removed to the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

The funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, September 15, at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent in Scranton. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call on Monday night at the Marian Convent.


 

” Sister M. Lawrence Tierney of Sayre, died Saturday a the Robert Packer Hospital following a two week illness.

Sister Tierney was a Servant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and taught in the Sayre Epiphany School for 16 years.

She was born in Susquehanna, Pa., October 26, 1897, the daughter of Edward J. and Hannah Doyle Tierney.

Sister Tierney is survived by one sister, Mrs. John O’Brien of Baltimore, Md., six nieces and one nephew.

A con-celebrated high mass of the recitation of the Rosary was celebrated this morning at 11 o’clock in the Church of the Epiphany.

Following the mass, Sister Tierney was removed to the Immaculate Heart of Marian Convent, Marywood, Scranton, Pa.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 9:30 at the Marian Convent.”
