Sister M. Johnita Hines, IHM

April 6, 1918 – October 17, 1999

Sister M. Johnita Hines, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, October 17, 1999 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on April 6, 1919 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and given the name Lucille Mary. She was the daughter of the late John and Mary Dennis Hines. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1936, made temporary profession of her vows on May 8, 1939, and final profession of her vows on August 1, 1942.

Sister Johnita served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA; and St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA; St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NY; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY; St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD; and at schools located in Brooklyn and Manhasset, NY. She also served as the library coordinator at St. Clare Elementary School in Scranton, PA.

From 1988 until the time of her death, Sister Johnita served as a prayer minister at Nativity Convent, the IHM Center, and the Marian Convent, all located in Scranton.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and religion from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard, William and Richard, and five sisters, Regina Brown, Agnes Hopkins, Lenore Hopkins, Margaret Weichel and Marian Williams.

She is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be Wednesday, October 20 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
