Sister Mary John Dougherty, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, October 16, 1929, at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA
She was born on October 22, 1853 in Mahanoy City, PA, and given the name Ellen. She was the daughter of the late James and Hannah Ketner Dougherty. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1875, received the religious habit on April 25, 1876, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1878.
Sister Mary John served as a teacher at IHM schools located the Dioceses of Scranton and Altoona, PA.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry F. and Daniel; and four sisters, Mary, Hannah C., Virginia and Sister M. Austin, IHM.
She is survived by two sisters, Sarah Crosby and Catherine both of Philadelphia, PA; a brother, John of Omaha, NE; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday, October 19 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call on Friday at St. Agnes Place.
Archival Remembrance:
Although Sister Mary John grew up in Philadelphia, she was known to many people in Scranton and and vicinity, having served in the schools of the order in Scranton, Pittston, and other parts of the diocese along with schools located in the Altoona Diocese. She was a sister of Sister Mary Austin, who died less than a year ago at St. Agnes Place, and was also well known in the diocese, where she taught for many years.
