Sister M. Johanne Barry, IHM

March 24, 1921 – May 2, 1995

Sister M. Johanne Barry, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, May 2, 1995 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on March 24, 1921 in Pittsburgh, PA, and given the name Patricia. She was the daughter of the late Francis A. and Mary Agnes Kennedy Barry. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1938, made her first profession of vows on May 8, 1941, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1944.

Sister Johnanne served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Rose High School in Carbondale, PA; Immaculate Conception High School in Lock Haven, PA; St. Paul High School in Scranton, PA; Immaculata High School in New York City, PA; and St. John High School in Pittston, PA.

Sister served as principal at the following schools: St. Mary High School in Manhasset, NY; Seton Catholic High School in Pittston, PA; and Seton Central High School in Binghamton, NY.

Sister Johnanne also served as the dean of students at Marywood College in Scranton, PA; administrative assistant at Holy Cross High School in Delran, NJ; assistant to the Superior General of the IHM Congregation in Scranton, PA, from 1978 to 1982; and educational consultant for secondary schools for the IHM Congregation in Scranton, PA, from 1975 to 1978.

In 1988, she began work as a research for education consultant and published, Power, a newsletter for educators. She continued in this work until the time of her death at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in science from Marywood College, and a Master of Science degree in chemistry/physics from Notre Dame University.

She was preceded in death by a brother, the Honorable Francis Barry.

She is survived by two sisters, Sr. Janice Barry, IHM, and Mary Dixon, and a brother, Thomas, all of Pittsburgh, PA.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.

Archival Remembrance:

Sr. Johanne Barry, IHM, a woman of prophetic vision, died on May 2, 1995, after serving as a Sister of IHM for 54 years. In her ministry as Assistant to the Superior General, and as Education Consultant for Secondary Schools for the IHM Congregation, she significantly helped shape the Congregation’s mission and constantly challenged its membership to grow and bring forth its giftedness. Sr. Johanne lived her life with courage and conviction to the ideals she valued. Her example touched the lives of many in her service in apostolates that stretched from Pennsylvania to New York and New Jersey.
