Sister M. Jerome Horan, IHM

Sister M. Jerome Horan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Tuesday, January 30, 1990 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.
She was born on July 8, 1910 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late Edward Aloyius and Helen (Nellie) Murtaugh Horan. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1927, received the religious habit on December 28, 1927, and made profession of her vows on December 27, 1929.
Sister Jerome served as a teacher at the following schools: Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA; St. Ann High School in Scranton, PA; St. Leo High School in Ashley, PA; Kolb High School in Masontown, PA; and Archbishop Neale School in LaPlata, MD.
Sister Jerome served as principal and senior teacher at St. Patrick School in Olyphant, PA; and principal at St. Dominic School in Oyster Bay, NY.
Sister also served as the director of the religious education program at St. Dominic School in Oyster Bay, NY; and pastoral minister at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA, from 1975 to 1981.
From 1981 until the time of her death, Sister Jerome served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in Latin/French from Catholic University.
She was preceded in deathy by two brothers, Edward and Thomas, and a sister, Helen.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Gilroy Horan of Scranton, PA; three nephews, Edward A. of Staten Island, NY, Thomas of Poughkeepsie, NY, and Jerome of Santa Barbara, CA; and two nieces, Rosemary of Alpena, MI, and Dorothy of Sykesville, MD; grandnieces and grandnephews. She is also survived by cousins, including Reverend Francis Barrett (a first cousin).
The funeral will be Saturday, February 3 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will be at Saint Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Friday afternoon or evening.
