Sister M. Jamesine Fraser, IHM

June 6, 1925 – February 24, 1985

Sister M. Jamesine Fraser, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Sunday, February 24, 1985 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on June 6, 1925, in Brooklyn, NY, and given the name Muriel. She was daughter of the late James and Mary Agnes Burke Fraser. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1947, received the religious habit on May 8, 1948, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1950.

Sister Jamesine served as a teacher of home economics and related subjects at St. Mary High School, Manhasset, NY, and at St. Mary of the Mount High School in Pittsburgh, PA.

In 1964, Sister Jamesine joined the faculty at Marywood College, and assumed the position of chairperson of the Department of Human Ecology (formerly Home Economics). During her time, the department enjoyed significant growth and national renown. In addition to her academic career and professional memberships, Sister Jamesine was involved in many civic endeavors, particularly “Meals on Wheels.”

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in home economics education from New York University.

She is survived by her twin sister, Grace Miller of San Pedro, California, a brother, James W. Fraser of Ladson, South Carolina, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday, February 28 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in the IHM Generalate Chapel at Marywood. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Wednesday afternoon or evening
