Sister M. Irmina McMahon, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, November 4, 1967, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on October 12, 1881 in Barclay, PA, and given the name Joanna. She was the daughter of the late John and Johanna Smith McMahon. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 2, 1906, received the religious habit on July 16, 1907, and made profession of her vows on April 3, 1909.

Sister Irmina served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1909 to 1912; St. Lawrence Academy in Portland, OR, from 1912 to 1917; IHM Academy in Coeur d’ Alene, ID, from 1917 to 1920 and 1929 to 1930; St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, PA, from 1920 to 1921; St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY, from 1921 to 1924; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1924 to 1929; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in West Pittston, PA, from 1948 to 1954; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA, from 1954 to 1956; and Sacred Heart Elementary School in Mt. Holly, NJ. She served as superior at the IHM Academy in Coeur d’ Alene, ID, from 1929 to 1930.

Sister served as principal and superior at Immaculate Conception Elementary School in West Pittston, PA, from 1948 to 1954.

Sister Irmina also served as the bursar and first assistant for the leadership team of the IHM Congregation in Scranton, PA, from 1930 to 1948.

From 1957 until the time of her death, Sister Irmina served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth Veronica O’Connor, Mary S. Harvey, and Ellen Louise Burke, and a brother, Sebastian Edward.

She is survived by a nephew and several nieces, including Sister M. Mercedes O’Connor, CSC, and Sister M. Mercedes O’Connor, CSC.

The funeral will be Monday, November 6, at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Marian Convent.
