Sister M. Hyacinth Tierney, IHM

Sister M. Hyacinth Tierney, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, October 13, 1936, at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

She was born on May 19, 1873, in Halstead, PA, and given the name Margaret. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Shea Tierney. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 22, 1896, received the religious habit on February 2, 1897, and made profession of her vows on July 15, 1899.

Sister Hyacinth served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick High School in Scranton, PA; St. John the Evangelist High School in Pitston, PA; and St. Rose High School in Carbondale, PA.

Sister was mother superior at the following convents: St. Justin’s Convent in Pittsburgh, PA, Sacred Heart of Mary Convent in Jermyn, PA; and at St. Mary’s Convent in Manhasset, NY, from 1931 until the time of her death.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Kathryne (Cate) Gaudin, Anna Elizabeth Gillespie, Frances X. Stack, and Agnes Grogan; and a brother, Charles.

She is survived by four sisters, Emma Grattan and Nellie Grogan, both of Hallstead, PA, and Theresa Boerner and Mary M. Fitzgerald, both of Scranton, PA; a brother, Patrick (John) of Chicago, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be on Friday, October 16, at 9:30 a.m. with a solemn requiem Mass in St. Catherine’s Church, Moscow. Interment to follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Thursday afternoon or evening at St. Joseph’s Convent in Elmhurst.
