Sister M. Hildegarde Campbell, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, July 12, 1935 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.
She was born on February 22, 1865, in Carbondale, PA, and given the name Jane. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Mitchell Campbell. Two of the five Campbell children entered the IHM Congregation. She entered the IHM Congregation on June 23, 1881, received the religious habit on November 15, 1881, and made profession of her vows on September 5, 1883.
Sister Hildegarde served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick School in Olyphant, PA; St. Paul School in Scranton, PA; and St. John the Evangelist School in Scranton, PA.
Sister served as principal and superior at St. John the Evangelist School in Bellefonte, PA, from 1929 until shortly before her passing.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Patrick and Thomas, and three sisters, Bridget, Ellen and Sister M. Cyprian, IHM.
She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Campbell Boylan of Carbondale, PA; and several nieces and nephews, including Reverend Aloysius Boylan, assistant pastor of St. Leo’s Church in Ashley, PA, and John Boylan of Washington, DC.
The funeral will be Monday, July 15 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Rose’s Church, Carbondale, followed by interment at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Carbondale.
Archival Remembrance:
Sister M. Hildegarde passed away last evening (July 12) at 5 o’clock in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Carbondale, after an illness of two weeks. During her fifty-two years of service in the educational field, she taught at St. Patrick’s in Olyphant, St. Paul’s in Green Ridge, St. John’s in South Scranton, and St. John’s in Bellefonte, having just completed her sixth year as superior and principal of the latter institution. Throughout that time, she endeared herself to hundreds of pupils with whom she came in contact with, and whom will be devasted to hear of her passing.
