Sister M. Henry Kennedy, IHM

May 21, 1914 – March 27, 1985

Sister M. Henry Kennedy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Wednesday, March 27, 1985, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on May 21, 1914, in Jermyn, PA, and given the name Annamae. She was the daughter of the late Harry (Henry) F. and Elizabeth Collins Kennedy. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1936 received the religious habit on May 3, 1937, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1939.

Sister Henry served as teacher at the following schools: St. Edward School in Twin Falls, Idaho; St. Mary Help of Christians Elementary School in Pittston, PA; and St. Mary School in Goldsboro, NC. Later as a teacher of home economics and biology, she was assigned to St. Rose High School, Carbondale, PA; and St. Mary High School in Manhasset, NY; as well as schools located in Masontown, PA, and Brooklyn, and Forest Hills, NY.

Sister also served as an office assistant at St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA, and at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Henry (Harry) P., Jr.

She is survived by a first cousin, Mrs. Robert O’Hara in Carbondale, PA, and two nephews.

The funeral will be Friday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at the Marian Convent in Scranton. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Thursday afternoon or evening at the Marian Convent.


Archival Remembrance:

Sister Henry began her ministry in education as an intermediate grade teacher at St. Edward School in Twin Falls, Idaho; then at St. Mary Help of Christians in Pittston; and at St. Mary School in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Later as a high school teacher of home economics and biology, she was assigned to St. Rose High School, Carbondale; as well as IHM schools located in Masontown, Pennsylvania; Manhasset, Brooklyn, and Forest Hills, New York. She also served as an office assistant at St. Patrick School and at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
