Sister M. Gregory Murphy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, August 6, 1905, at St. Patrick’s Convent in Olyphant, PA.
She was born on August 3, 1856 in Pittston, PA, and was given the name Catherine. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Mulchahey Murphy. She entered the IHM Congregation on May 15, 1874, received the religious habit on August 14, 1874, and made profession of her vows on February 13, 1877.
Sister Gregory served as a teacher at: St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA, and St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA. She served as superior of the following convents: St. Joseph’s Convent in Williamsport, PA; St. Patrick’s Convent in Scranton, PA; St. Rose Academy in Carbondale, PA; St. Paul’s Convent in Scranton, PA, and St. Patrick’s Convent in Olyphant, PA.
She is survived by a brother, James of Laflin, PA, four sisters, Sister Mary Dositheus (Agnes), IHM, of West Chester, PA, Mary Jane McAndrew of Youngstown, OH, Lizzie and Ellen, both of Pittston, PA, and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Tuesday, August 8 at 9:00 a.m. at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, Scranton, followed by interment at the Marywood College Cemetery, on the grounds of Marywood College in Scranton, PA. A solemn high mass of requiem will be celebrated at the chapel by Bishop M.J. Hoban.
