Sister M. Gabriel Donnelly, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, January 1, 1942, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on September 30, 1860 in Saint Joseph, Susquehanna County, PA, and given the name Mary J. She was the daughter of the late Michael James and Mary Jane Donnelly, and the step-daughter of the late Ann McGinty Donnelly. She entered the IHM Congregation on April 19, 1882, received the religious habit on August 15, 1882, and made profession of her vows on July 31, 1884.

Sister Gabriel served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA; St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA; St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA; St. Mary of the Mount School in Pittsburgh, PA; Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY; and St. Rose School in Carbondale, PA.

Sister served as superior for a number of years at St. Patrick’s Orphanage in Scranton, PA.

In 1911, Sister Gabriel was sent to Chicago, where she served as novice mistress and later mother superior of the newly formed Lithuanian Community of Sisters of St. Casimir. She also directed the Slovak Community of the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius, at St. Joseph’s Convent in Hazleton, PA.

From 1941 until the time of her death, she served as a teacher at St. Ann School in Scranton, PA.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Delehanty, Sister Mary Xaiver (Catherine A.), RSM, and Anna Agusta Brow, and three brothers, Patrick J., John J. and Serenus C.

She is survived by a brother, Jerome M. of Binghamton, NY, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday, January 5 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at on Sunday at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA.
