Sister M. Florita Waters, IHM

Sister M. Florita Waters, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Saturday, November 5, 1988, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on October 5, 1905, in New York, and given the name Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Sarah Ann Doyle Waters. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1928, received the religious habit on August 15, 1928, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1930.

Sister Florita served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School at Archbald, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Alphonsus High School in New York, NY, from 1948 to 1952; Immaculata High School in New York, NY, from 1953 to 1956; and St. Rosalia High School in Pittsburgh, PA. She also taught CCD classes at Bishop O’Hara High School in Dunmore, PA.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Marywood College, and an Master of Science degree in education from Duquesne University.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard, and Paul; and her step-mother, Josephine Gregory Waters.

She is survived by five brothers, Henry Edward of Oyster Bay, NY, John Harry of Garden City, NY, Gerald of Syosset, NY, Peter of Lakewood, NJ, and Claude of Mill Neck, NY; two sisters, Margaret Robbins of Glen Cove, NY, and Mary Jo Talbot of Point Pleasant, NY; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday, November 8, at 11:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Monday afternoon or evening at the Marian Convent.
