Sister M. Evangelista Dougherty, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, August 28, 1931, at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA.
She was born on March 8, 1858 in Summitville, Cambria County, PA, and given the name Matilda. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Cassidy Dougherty. She entered the IHM Congregation on May 28, 1882, received the religious habit on March 27, 1883, and made profession of her vows on April 6, 1885.
Sister Evangelista served as a teacher the following schools: St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in West Pittston, PA; and St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA; along with schools located in the Diocese of Altoona, PA.
From 1928 until the time of her death, Sister Evangelista served as a prayer minister at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Rose Ann Hanlon, Mary Matthews, Sara Jane Boland, Bridget, and Julia Agnes (who was a Sister of Mercy), and two brothers, Christopher Patrick and Augustine.
She is survived by a brother, John Joseph of Altoona, PA, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Monday, August 31 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call on Sunday at St. Agnes Place.
