Sister M. Evangeline Conmy, IHM

Sister M. Evangeline Conmy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, March 11, 1984, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.
She was born on December 8, 1898, in Carbondale, PA, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Anthony and Jane Scanlon Conmy. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 29, 1917, received the religious habit on January 3, 1918, and made profession of vows on December 27, 1919.
During a long career, Sister Evangeline taught upper elementary and secondary classes at St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, PA, and at schools located on Pittsburgh, PA. She served as principal and teacher at Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Binghamton, NY. Sister also taught at schools located in Baltimore, MD.
Sister Evangeline’s ministry in education included a period during which she was supervisor of schools.
From 1972 until the time of her death, Sister Evangeline was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph, and two sisters, Elizabeth (infant) and Ann Conmy.
She is survived by two sisters, Helen Mannion and Margaret Conmy; a brother, John, all of Carbondale, PA; nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday, March 15, at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Wednesday afternoon or evening.
