Sister M. Eusebius Burke, IHM

May 26, 1867 – April 1, 1939

Sister M. Eusebius Burke, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, April 1, 1939 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on May 26, 1867 in Carbondale, PA, and given the name Rose Anna. She was the daughter of the late Thomas G. and Bridget Gallagher Burke. She entered the IHM Congregation with her sister, Catherine (Sister M. Assissium) on February 2, 1887, received the religious habit on August 2, 1887, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1889.

During the almost half century that she was a member of the order, Sister Eusebius was a teacher of music, teaching at schools located in Susquehanna and Pittsburgh, PA; and at St. John’s Convent in Pittston, PA. At Marywood College, Sister taught music for many years.

For the last two and a half years, Sister Eusebius has served as a prayer minister at St. Rose’s Convent in Carbondale, PA.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Michael Edmund; and five sisters, Anna Lee, Mary Costello, Sabina Williams, Elizabeth Nelson and Bridget Agnes Smurl.

She is survived by two sisters, Sister M. Assissium, IHM, of St. John’s Convent in Scranton, PA, and Theresa Horish of Carbondale, PA; a brother, Edward of New York City, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday, April 3 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose’s Church in Carbondale, followed by interment at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Carbondale, PA. Friends may call at St. Rose Convent on Sunday afternoon.
