Sister M. Emelia Bigley, IHM

Sister M. Emelia Bigley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, February 15, 1940 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.
She was born on March 11, 1858 in Summit Hill, PA, and given the name Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Friel Bigley. She entered the IHM Congregation on May 27, 1887, received the religious habit on October 4, 1887, and made profession of her vows on April 8, 1890.
Sister Emelia served as a teacher at St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA; St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA; St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA; the IHM Academy in Coeur d’Alene, ID; and St. Basil School in Dushore, PA.
She is preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine and Bridget, and three brothers, John Ambrose, Charles Francis and Patrick Francis, Jr.
She is survived by two sisters, Mary Bigley of Wisconsin, and Margaret Smith of Philadelphia, PA; and several nieces and nephews, including Sister M. Eymard, IHM, superior of St. Basil’s Convent, Dushore, PA.
The funeral will be on Saturday, February 17 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Rose Church, Carbondale, followed by interment at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Carbondale.
