Sister M. Elphege Lowry, IHM

Sister M. Elphege Lowry, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, October 21, 1975, at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, PA.
She was born on November 22, 1902 in in the Minooka (Irish) section of Scranton, PA, and given the name Cecilia. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Mary Coyne Lowry. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1928, received the holy habit on April 1, 1929, and made her profession of vows on April 14, 1931.
Sister Elphege served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Ann High School in Scranton, PA; St. Alphonsus Commercial High School in New York City, NY; Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, NY; St. John High School in Pittston, PA; St. Mary of the Mount High School in Pittsburgh, PA; St. Rosalia High School in Pittsburgh, PA; and St. Paul High School in Scranton, PA. She also served as guidance counselor at Bishop Klonowski High School in Scranton, PA.
At Marywood College in Scranton, PA, Sister Elphege served on the summer faculty, and later served as chair for the Graduate Education/Guidance department, from 1973 to 1974.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Martin and Peter Joseph; and three sisters, Anna Callahan, Ellen (Nellie) Lowry, and Bridget (Bea) Deignan.
She is survived by three sisters, Catherine Lydon, Mary M. Lowry, and Theresa Ruane, all of Scranton, PA, and nieces and nephews.
The funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 23, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church on River Street in Scranton. Interment will follow at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Wednesday at the IHM Convent, 422 River Street in South Scranton, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Sister M. Elphege Lowry, Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Order, died Tuesday in Mercy Hospital.
She was a member of the facuilty at Bishop Klonowski High School and resided at the IHM Convent, 422 River St.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Peter and Mary Coyen Lowry, she entered the congregation on December 7, 1928, received her habit April 1, 1929, and made her vows April 14, 1931.
She taught in the following high schools: St. Ann’s, Scranton; St. Alphonsus, New York; Most Holy Rosary, Syracuse, N.Y.; St. Mary of the Mount and St. Rosalia, Pittsburgh; St. Paul’s, Scranton. She also taught summer extension classes at Marywood College.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Cathering Lydon, Mary Lowry, both of Minooka; Mrs. Theresa Ruane, Scranton.
The funeral will be Thursday with mass at 9:30 am in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, South Scranton. Interment, St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the IHM Convent, 422 River St., 2 to 4, 7 to 9 p.m.”
