Sister M. Elaine Dempsey, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Thursday, September 1, 1977, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on December 21, 1896 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Eleanor. She was the daughter of the late James W. and Mary E. Dunleavy Dempsey. She graduated from St. John the Evangelist High School, and was a talented musician. She entered the IHM Congregation on January 6, 1914, received the religious habit on August 2, 1914, and made profession of her vows August 3, 1916.

Sister Elaine served as a teacher at the following schools: Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Mary John School in Cresson, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA; and at elementary schools located in New York City, NY.

From 1972 until the time of her death, Sister Elaine served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is survived by a sister, Kathleen Dempsey of Scranton, PA.

The funeral will be Monday, September 5, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent on Saturday and Sunday.
