Edith Halligan, IHM

Sister M. Edith Halligan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on July 4, 1919 in West New York, New Jersey, and given the name Helen V. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Ellen Carlson Halligan. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1937, made temporary profession of her vows on May 7, 1940, and final profession of her vows on August 1, 1943.

Sister Edith served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. John High School in Susquehanna, PA, from 1948 to 1950; St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA, from 1950 to 1951; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ; Holy Cross High School in Delran, NJ; and at high schools in Pittsburgh, PA, and Manhasset and Uniondale, New York.

Sister also served as a faculty member in the music department at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1940 to 1942, and 1951 to 1959; and music teacher at the IHM Novitiate in Scranton, PA, from 1962 to 1966. She also provided private music lessons to students at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA, from 1990 to 2000, and later at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA, from 2000 to 2002.

From 2002 until the time of her death, Sister Edith served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Music degree from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in music from New York University.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Michael John, and a sister, Sr. Rita Halligan, IHM.

She is survived by a brother, Dr. William A. Halligan, MD of Pinehurst, NC, nieces and nephews.

The funeral was Wednesday, May 26 at 9:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday afternoon or evening at the Marian Convent.
