Sister M. Dunstan Gallagher, IHM

Sister M. Dunstan Gallagher, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, March 19, 1971, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on August 4, 1888 in Ralston, PA, and given the name Ellen. She was the daughter of the late Constatine D. and Elizabeth Jane Cummings Gallagher. She entered the IHM Congregation on January 6, 1909, received the religious habit on April 13, 1909, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1911.

Sister Dunstan served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA, in 1911; St. John’s Home in Cresson, PA, from 1919 to 1935; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY, from 1935 to 1936; St. Mary of the Mount Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1936 to 1943; and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ, from 1958 to 1960.

Sister served as the principal at the following schools: St. Mary of the Mount Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1936 to 1943; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA, from 1949 to 1950; and St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1950 to 1955.

From 1960 until the time of her death, Sister Dunstan served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by four brothers, John, William, James and Frank, and two sisters, Anna Riley and Catherine E. Faughnan.

She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Charlotte Faughnan of Trout Run, PA, nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Reverend Charles Cummings of Dunmore, PA, and Reverend Francis Corcoran of West Hazleton, PA.

The funeral will be Monday, March 22 at 9:30 am at the Marian Convent, Scranton, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Sunday after 2:00 pm.
