Sister M. Claudia Whelan, IHM

Sister M. Claudia Whelan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, February 12, 1958, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on September 24, 1872, in Scranton, PA, and given the name Catherine Theresa. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Osborne Whelan. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1908, received the religious habit on July 16, 1908, and made profession of her vows on October 15, 1910.

Sister Claudia devoted her life to caring for resident children at St. Mary’s Home in Cresson, PA, and St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Scranton, PA.

She is survived by three nieces and a nephew in Buffalo, NY.

The funeral will be Saturday, February 15, at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the Marian Convent.

Archival Remembrance:

Sister Claudia Whelan gave devoted service to little ones at St. Mary’s, Cresson, and at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, Scranton. For the past ten years, she was a patient at our hospital and later at the Marian Convent. A long preparation for God’s summons found her ready. May God grant to our devoted Sister Claudia the eternal rest that she so frequently prayed for others.
