Sister M. Christina Murphy, IHM

Sister M. Christina Murphy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
She was born on June 29, 1913 in Pittston, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Tigue Murphy. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1936, made temporary profession of her vows on August 2, 1938, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1941.
Sister Christina served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, PA, from 1938 to 1943; St. Mary Elementary School in Patton, PA, from 1956 to 1959; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA, from 1968 to 1972; St. Mary of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, from 1973 to 1975; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1975 to 1980; Sacred Heart Elementary School in Mount Holly, NJ; Holy Trinity Elementary School in Poughkeepsie, NY; Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School in Rocky Mount, NC; St. Henry Elementary School in Gresham, OR; and in elementary school located in Forest Hills, NY, Goldsboro, NC, and Coeur d’ Alene, ID.
From 1986 until the time of her death, Sister Christina served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.
She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Marywood College.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Joseph, John, Bernard, Francis, and William.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was Friday, May 20 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call on Thursday after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
