Sister M. Carina McCaffrey, IHM

Sister M. Carina McCaffrey, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Thursday, August 6, 1981 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, after an illness.
She wa born on December 15, 1906 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late Daniel J. and Winifred Healey McCaffrey. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 22 1927, received the religious habit on December 29, 1927, and made profession of her vows on December 27, 1929.
Sister Carina served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Paul Elementary School in Edgewood, RI; St Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY; Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA; Mt. Holly Regional Catholic Elementary School in Mt. Holly, NJ; and St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA. She also served as a catechetical instructor at St. Ignatius Catechetical Center in Kingston, PA.
In 1953, Sister Carina was assigned to Marywood College in Scranton, PA, where she taught in the education and psychology departments. She later became chairman of the education department and served in that post until 1978, when for reasons of health, she accepted a part-time position in the “Careers with Child” Program at the college.
From 1981 until the time of her death, Sister Carina served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Brother D. Augustine (Dominic Augustine), F.S.C., Dr. Jerome, Joseph, and Edward.
She is survived by a sister, Sister M. Wendan, IHM, who is currently a music teacher at St. John the Evangelist School in Clinton, MD, a brother, Daniel of Madison, NJ, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by the following first cousins, Sister M. Angelisse Boyce, IHM, of Cresco, PA, Sister M. Dorothy, IHM, of Lima, Peru, Sister M. Jerome Horan, IHM, who is currently serving at St. Joseph Hospital in Carbondale, PA, and Sister Margaret McCaffrey, A.P.B., of Indiana.
The funeral will be Monday, August 10 with Mass of Christian Burial in the IHM General Chapel at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Sunday afternoon or evening.
