Sister M. Bonaventure McCloskey, IHM

December 28, 1905 – December 26, 1986

Sister M. Bonaventure McCloskey, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died Friday, December 26, 1986, at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania.

She was born on December 28, 1905 in Pittsburgh, PA, and was given the name Stella. She was the daughter of the late Edwin Joseph and Sarah Agnes Welsh McCloskey. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1925, received the religious habit on December 28, 1925, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1927.

Sister Bonaventure served as a teacher in the following IHM schools: St. Mary Elementary School in Goldsboro, NC, from 1928 to 1947; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1953 to 1954; St. Paul Elementary School in Edgewood, RI, from 1957 to 1959; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1959 to 1963; St. Rosalia Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1963 to 1967; and Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1967 to 1968.

Sister Bonaventure also served as principal and teacher at the following schools: St. Mary Elementary School in Goldsboro, NC, from 1941 to 1947; St. Bernardine Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1947 to 1953; and Our Lady Queen of Elementary School Martyrs in Forest Hills, NY, from 1954 to 1957.

Sister also served as a librarian at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1968 to 1975.

From 1975 until the time of her death, Sister Bonaventure served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edwin, William, and Francis.

She is survived by two sisters, Sister Genevieve, IHM, of Oyster Bay, NY, and Mary Grace Flatley of Burlington, VT; a brother, Lawrence of Merrick, NY; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday, December 30 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends my call at the Marian Convent Monday afternoon or evening.
