Sister M. Bernadette Horan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, January 15, 1996, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on July 8, 1924 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Madelyn Ann. She was the daughter of the late Michael J. and Mary Norton Horan. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1942, made temporary profession of her vows on May 8, 1945, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1948.

Sister Bernadette served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Clare Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Michael’s School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA; St. Mary in Goldsboro, NC; Monsignor McHugh Elementary School in Cresco, PA; St. Thomas Elementary School in Bedford, PA; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Binghamton, NY; Notre Dame Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, PA; St. Raymond in East Rockaway, NY; and Wyoming Area Catholic Elementary School in Wyoming, PA.

From 1994 until the time of her death, Sister Bernadette served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a Master of Arts degree in reading, both from Marywood College.

She is survived by a cousin, Joseph Ryan of Scranton, PA.

The funeral will be Thursday, January 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Wednesday after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.


Archival Remembrance:

With kindness and gentleness, Sister Bernadette touched the lives of hundreds of children as an elementary school teacher when she died on January 15, leaving behind a vibrant, living legacy.
