Sister M. Bartholomew Judge, IHM

July 18, 1893 – September 22, 1974

Sister M. Bartholomew Judge, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, September 22, 1974, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on July 18, 1893 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Helen Marie. She was daughter of the late Thomas and Bridget Coughlin Judge. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1913, received the religious habit on August 2, 1913, and made profession of her vows on July 6, 1915.

Sister Bartholomew served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA, from 1915 to 1916; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA, from 1916 to 1918; St. Joseph Elementary School in Aliquippa, PA, from 1918 to 1922; St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo, PA, from 1922 to 1933; All Saints Elementary School in Masontown, PA, from 1933 to 1939; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA, from 1939 to 1943; Cathedral High School in Scranton, PA, from 1960 to 1961; Sacred Heart Elementary School in La Plata, MD, from 1961 to 1962; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Binghamton, NY, from 1962 to 1974.

Sister served as a principal at the following schools: All Saints Elementary School in Masontown, PA, from 1933 to 1939; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA, from 1939 to 1943; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1948 to 1954; and St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY, from 1954 to 1957.

Sister Bartholomew also served as the supervisor of schools in Scranton, from 1946 to 1948.

From 1974 until the time of her death, Sister served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Bartholomew Thomas, a sister, Monica Joyce, and an aunt, Sister M. Eleanor Judge, IHM.

She is surivived by a sister, Sister M. Alfred, IHM, of Scranton, PA; a brother-in-law, James Joyce of Pittston, PA; a sister-in-law, Irene Judge of Kingston, PA; and a niece, Anna Marie O’Malley of Pittston, PA.

The funeral will be Tuesday, September 24 at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Monday after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
