Sister M. Assunta McCaffrey, IHM

June 5, 1901 – April 8, 1951

Sister M. Assunta McCaffrey, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, April 8, 1951, at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Scranton, PA.

She was born on June 5, 1901 in Exchange, PA, and given the name Mary R. She was the daughter of the late Hugh E. and Mary Ann Shearin McCaffrey. She entered the IHM Congregation on November 3, 1919, received the religious habit on August 2, 1920, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1922.

Sister Assunta served as a teacher at the followng schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, PA; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in West Pittston, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA; and St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA.

Sister served in child care for resident children at St. Patrick’s Orphanage in Scranton, PA, and St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Scranton, PA.

She is survived by two sisters, Anna Siats of Danville, PA, and Catherine Yagel of Milton, PA; five brothers, Thomas of Williamsport, PA, Francis of Bloomsburg, PA, and Hugh, Albert and Patrick of Turbotsville, PA; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday, April 10, at 9:30 a.m. with a solemn requiem mass in the chapel at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Scranton. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.
