Sister M. Assissium Burke, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, November 3, 1947 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on June 26, 1869 in Carbondale, PA, and given the name Catherine (Kate). She was the daughter of the late Thomas G. and Bridget Gallagher Burke. She entered the IHM Congregation with her sister, Rose (Sister M. Eusebius) on February 2, 1887, received the religious habit on August 2, 1887, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1889.

Sister Assissium was an accomplished musician, and taught at the following schools: St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA; Holy Rosary School in Scranton, PA; and St. John the Evangelist School in Scranton, PA. Sister served as principal and superior at the following schools: St. Patrick School in Spangler, PA; and St. Mary School in Upper Malboro, MD.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Michael Edmund; and six sisters, Anna Lee, Mary Costello, Sabina Williams, Bridget Agnes, Sister M. Eusebius, IHM, and Elizabeth Nelson.

She is survived by a sister, Theresa Horish of Carbondale, PA; a brother, Edward of New York City, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be on Friday, Decmber 5 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church in Carbondale, followed by interment at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Carbondale. Friends may call on Thursday afternoon at St. Rose’s Convent, Carbondale.
