Sister M. Antoinette Diskin, IHM

June 1, 1869 – October 1, 1939

Sister M. Antoinette Diskin, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, October 1, 1939, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Scranton, PA.

She was born on June 1, 1869 in Birmingham, England, and given the name Rose. She was the daugther of the late Patrick and Sarah Costello Diskin. The family immigrated to the United States before 1876, and settled in Scranton, PA. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1896, received the religious habit on February 2, 1897, and made profession of her vows on July 15, 1899.

Sister Antoinette served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo, PA; All Saints Elementary School in Masontown, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Danville, PA; Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Sister M. Anthanasius, IHM.

She is survived by a sister, Sister M. Helena, IHM, of Avoca, PA; a brother, John of Scranton, PA; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, October 4, at 9:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in Pittston, PA. Interment will follow at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Carbondale, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday afternoon or evening at St. John’s Convent in Pittston.


Archival Remembrance:

Sister Antoinette was born in Scranton, a daughter of the late Patrick and Sarah Diskin, who were well known residents of West Scranton. She received her early training in St. Cecilia’s Academy and as a young woman made her novitiate at St. Rose Convent, Carbondale, and subsquently took her final vows. She was one of three sisters of the Diskin family to enter the Immaculate Heart of Mary order. For more than forty years, Sister Antoinette had devoted her life to educating and training the young. She had been stationed most recently at St. John’s Convent, Pittston, and died on October 1, 1939 at the St. Mary’s Mater Misercordia Hospital, where she had been undergoing treatment.
