Sister M. Agnes McKune, IHM

November 21, 1857 – June 3, 1939

Sister M. Agnes McKune, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, June 3, 1939, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA. She had the distinction of being the oldest member of the IHM Congregation.

She was born on November 21, 1857 in Auburn, PA, and given the name Margaret. She was the daughter of the late Bernard and Mary Ellen Dyer McKune. By 1860 the family had moved to Upper Pittston, PA, where she attended the local schools. She entered the IHM Congregation on January 25, 1876, received the religious habit on April 25, 1876, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1878.

Sister Agnes served as a principal and teacher at the following schools: St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA; St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA; St. Basil School in Dushore, PA; St. Alphonsus School in New York City, NY; St. Peter of Alcantara School in Port Washington, NY; and St. Patrick School in Olyphant, PA.

From 1935 until the time of her death, Sister Agnes was engaged in the ministry of prayer at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Reverend John B., Edward (Eddie) and Robert.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Ann McKune of Pittston, PA, and a brother, Thomas F. of Pleasantville, NJ.

The funeral will be Saturday, June 3, at 9:30 a.m. with a solemn high mass of requiem at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, PA, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.
