Sister M. Anastasia Lavelle, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Wednesday, December 16, 1987, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, after a brief illness.
She was born on November 20, 1912 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Anna Mary. She was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Mulrooney Lavelle. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1937, received the religious habit on May 7, 1938, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1940.
Sister Anastasia served as nursing supervisor at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, from 1941 to 1943; nursing supervisor at St. Joseph’s Children’s and Maternity Hospital in Scranton, from 1943 to 1953; head nurse at at St. Joseph’s Children’s and Maternity Hospital in Scranton, from 1953 to 1956; head nurse at the Marian Convent in Scranton, from 1956 to 1959; director of nursing at St. Joseph’s Children’s and Maternity Hospital in Scranton, from 1959 to 1971; staff nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, from 1971 to 1977; and staff nurse at the Marian Convent in Scranton, from 1977 to 1983. She also served as a pediatric instructor at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.
From 1983 until the time of her death, Sister Anastasia served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
She earned her R.N. degree at St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Scranton, and a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.
She was preceded in death by six brothers, Francis, Gerald, Patrick, William, Robert, and John.
She is survived by two sisters, Marie Coyne from Scranton, PA, and Helen Herzog from New Jersey, and several nieces and nephews, including our Sister Joan Coyne, IHM.
The funeral will be Saturday, December 19 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Covent Friday afternoon or evening. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Marian Convent.
