Sister M. Alacoque Kearney, IHM

Sister M. Alacoque Kearney, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, January 25, 1958, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on May 5, 1874, in Parsons, PA, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Ann E. Mahon Kearney. She entered the IHM Congregation on October 15, 1892, received the religious habit on April 3, 1893, and made profession of her vows on July 1, 1895.

Sister Alacoque served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Paul High School in Scranton, PA; St. Rose High School in Carbondale, PA; St. Andrew Parish School in Portland, OR; Altoona Catholic High School in Altoona, PA; Sacred Heart High School in New York City; and Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, NY.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Jennie McNamara and Sister Margaret de Chantal Kearney, VHM, and four brothers, Michael, William, Daniel, and Reverend Richard A. Kearney, TOR.

She is survived by three sisters, Sister M. Margaret Kearney, IHM, Sister M. Victoria Kearney, IHM, and Katie Mundy of Wilkes-Barre, PA; and a brother, Frank of New York City, NY.

The funeral will be Tuesday, January 28, at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent, with interment to follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Monday afternoon or evening at the Marian Convent.

Archival Remembrance:

Sister Alacoque was a member of a large family which gave five of its children to serve God in religion. Two sisters, Sister M. Margaret and Sister M. Victoria came to join her in the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Another sister, Sister Mary deChantal, at age sixty-five, entered the Visitandine Order in Wilmington, DE. A brother, Reverend Richard became a Third Order Regular Franciscan Friars in Altoona, PA.
